Buying a home in the Mediterranean

From a palazzo on Lake Como to an apartment above Monaco's harbour, a villa on Mallorca or a house on the Bosphorus, the Mediterranean holds some of the most sought-after homes in the world. The rules for buying them differ sharply from one shore to the next: who may buy, what the state charges on the way in, and whether a purchase brings the right to live there.

This section sets those rules out country by country, for twenty countries from Portugal to Morocco, checked against official sources and dated. Begin with the changes below, then open the guide for the country you have in mind.

Who can buy, how to buy, taxes and fees, residency through property, and the best areas, for each of the 20 countries.
