Bem-vindo

The city that named a wine

Porto gave its name to Portugal and to port. The wine is made upriver in the Douro Valley and for centuries came down by boat to age in the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from the city, where English and Portuguese houses still keep their cellars.

The old town, the Ribeira, climbs the hill above the river in tiers of tiled houses and churches, and it is World Heritage. The great iron bridge of Dom Luís I, opened in 1886, joins the two banks.

Upriver, the Douro Valley is one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world, its slopes cut into terraces by hand, also World Heritage. The finest way to see it is from a quinta among the vines, or by boat along the river.
