Kultura

A short coast, a long history

Slovenia holds only about forty-seven kilometres of Adriatic shore, yet its old port of Piran, built by Venice on a narrow point in the sea, is one of the loveliest towns of the northern Mediterranean, with its Tartini Square and the bell tower of St George's.

Within two hours inland lie the capital, Ljubljana, remade by the architect Jože Plečnik, and Lake Bled with its island church beneath the Julian Alps. The Škocjan Caves, carved by an underground river, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in the Soča Valley at Kobarid, Ana Roš's Hiša Franko has made the country a destination for the table.

This guide brings together only the first class: the restaurant, the festival, the golf and the places that meet our standard.
