About

About TheMediterranean.com

The Mediterranean has drawn travellers for three thousand years. It has the light of the Riviera, the islands of the Aegean, the palaces of Marrakech and the harbours of the Adriatic. Yet until now no single place brought its finest together. TheMediterranean.com was created to be that place.

One rule: first class or not at all

We feature only the best of the best. A hotel appears here only if it holds a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating, two or three MICHELIN Keys, or France's Palace distinction. Restaurants are the three- and two-MICHELIN-star tables and the most celebrated beach clubs. In the Alps, where fewer hotels and tables reach that bar, we also name each resort's officially five-star hotels and its finest starred tables. Yachts come through the leading superyacht brokers, flights are first and business class, and homes are offered through the leading agencies. Nothing budget or mass-market appears anywhere on the site. When in doubt, we leave it out.

Where nothing yet meets that standard, we say so plainly, rather than lower the bar.

Culture at the heart of it

Luxury on the Mediterranean is more than a fine hotel. It is the history, art, music, food and language that make each place unlike any other. Every country page opens with its culture before any hotel, and every page includes a few words of the local language and a guide to local customs.

Twenty-two countries and Gibraltar

From Portugal and Spain to Türkiye and Egypt, and from Monaco to Morocco, we cover every country around the Mediterranean, with Portugal and Gibraltar. For each we give the best time to visit, how to arrive by private jet, helicopter or yacht, and where to stay, dine, sail, shop and live.

Sixty-four places, and the principality of Monaco, have a guide of their own, from Madeira and Marbella to Mykonos and Cairo. Each names the one best hotel, the finest tables and beach clubs, the marinas and, where there is a market at our standard, the leading real estate agencies for a home of your own, and the trip planner prices a first-class journey from your home to the hotel door.

Beyond the Mediterranean: Luxury in The Alps

The same travellers who spend August on a yacht off Saint-Tropez spend February in a chalet in Courchevel or St. Moritz. So we follow them into the mountains, across the Swiss, French, Italian, Austrian and Bavarian Alps.

The Alps have their own section. It covers the great resorts and five-star hotels, the mountain restaurants, ski schools and heli-skiing, and the lakes of Geneva, Lucerne and Como. It also covers the private airports and altiports, and the private banks, clinics and schools of Switzerland. It runs all year: the snow from December to April, then the lakes, festivals and wildflower meadows of summer. Between the sea and the mountains, there is always somewhere at its finest.

Checked by hand, and dated

Every list on the site is researched and checked by hand, then dated by month and year so you always know how current it is. We link only to official websites, so every “Visit website” button takes you straight to the source. Some links may earn us a commission. It never decides what we list.

The Mediterranean Season Letter

Where to be, every season

Four letters a year, one for each season: the Mediterranean from spring to autumn, and Beyond the Mediterranean, into the Alps, in winter. The one best hotel to book, and the events worth crossing a sea for.
