Mark Weingard bought the first building on St Barbara Bastion in 2013, meaning it as a home, then acquired the neighbouring houses one by one. The hotel now spans four restored town houses and several vaults, some from the 1600s. The main house was among Valletta's grandest early 19th-century residences, and its façade, grand staircase and painted cupola have been restored.
The Istanbul studio Autoban designed thirteen of the rooms and suites and the rooftop restaurant, ION Harbour by Simon Rogan, which holds two MICHELIN stars, the only two-star table in Malta.
It is Malta's only Forbes Five-Star hotel, and in October 2025 it became the first and only hotel in Malta with two MICHELIN Keys.
