The Alhambra comes to Paris this winter

Published

One of the great UNESCO World Heritage sites of Spain comes to Paris. From 24 November 2026 to 16 May 2027 the Institut du monde arabe, Jean Nouvel's building on the left bank of the Seine, presents The Secrets of the Nasrid Alhambra, an exhibition on the palace of Granada, and one of the finest exhibitions of the season.

It shows the Alhambra as the Nasrid sultans built it, at the height of its splendour under Muhammad V in the fourteenth century: the Fountain of the Lions, the geometric decoration, the inscriptions carved into its walls, the court's festivities, its gardens, and the meeting of cultures across a frontier of war in the western Mediterranean. The symbolism of water runs through it all.

Digital restitutions bring lost rooms back to life, and visitors can hear the music of the inscriptions as well as read them. For Europe in winter, it is a fine reason to be in Paris, and a reminder to see the Alhambra itself in Granada in the spring.
