The former Hôtel Saint-George in Algiers, a hotel since 1889 on the site of a mansion of 1514.
Selected by TheMediterranean.com
Hôtel El Djazaïr, long known as the Hôtel Saint-George, stands on the site of a mansion built in 1514, and has been a hotel since 1889.
Its guests have included King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, Winston Churchill and Édith Piaf. From 1942 to 1943 it was General Eisenhower's Allied Force Headquarters, where the invasion of Sicily was planned, and room 141 is preserved.
New wings by the architect Fernand Pouillon followed, and the hotel reopened in 1982 under its present name: the historic grand hotel of Algiers.
