Menorca

The quiet Balearic: a whole island that is a biosphere reserve, coves of turquoise water below the pines, Mahón’s great natural harbour and old farmhouses among stone walls.

Benvinguts

The calm Balearic

Menorca is the quietest of the Balearic Islands, and the whole island has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1993. Its coast is a chain of small coves of clear turquoise water below pine woods, many reached only on foot or by boat.

For much of the eighteenth century the island was British, and Mahón, on one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, keeps Georgian sash windows and the gin that the sailors brought. At the other end of the island, Ciutadella was the old capital, a town of palaces and a cathedral.

The countryside is a patchwork of stone walls, farmhouses and Bronze Age monuments. In recent years the old farmhouses, the llocs, have become small hotels, and the island has become the discreet choice of those who know the Balearics well.

On yachts, soft-soled or bare feet on deck. Smart dress for fine dining; jackets are rarely required.
