Luxury in Portugal

Comporta

The discreet side of Portugal: rice fields and storks, reed-thatched cabins, miles of empty Atlantic beach, and villas hidden in the pines, just over an hour south of Lisbon.

Bem-vindo

Rice fields, dunes and quiet

Comporta is a handful of villages among rice fields on the Alentejo coast, where storks nest on the chimneys and the fishermen's cabins were thatched with reeds. For most of the twentieth century the land around it was one great private estate, which is why the coast stayed almost untouched.

Its beaches run for miles along the Atlantic, backed by dunes and umbrella pines, with only a few simple restaurants on the sand. Building is tightly limited, and the houses that have come are low and hidden, many of them designed by Portugal's leading architects.

That quiet drew European designers, artists and families looking for a summer without being seen, and Comporta became one of the most sought-after retreats in Europe. Life is barefoot and unhurried: horses on the beach at dusk, long lunches of rice and fish, and the Sado estuary, home to dolphins, close by.

How Portugal does things.

Portuguese. English is widely spoken in luxury hotels and leading restaurants in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve and Madeira. Speaking Spanish is best avoided: the languages are close, but it is not appreciated, and a few words of Portuguese go much further.
Greetings
A firm handshake with eye contact on first meeting; two cheek kisses, right cheek first, among friends and family. Use senhor / senhora until invited to be less formal, and greet by time of day: bom dia until noon, boa tarde in the afternoon, boa noite from early evening.
Dress
Dress respectfully in churches. On yachts, soft-soled or bare feet on deck. Smart dress for fine dining.
Dining
Lunch typically 12–2 pm, some restaurants serving until 3 pm; dinner from about 8–9 pm, later at weekends. Book ahead for well-known restaurants. Bread, olives, butter or cheese brought to the table at the start (the couvert) are charged unless you send them back; the couvert is not a tip. Meals are unhurried.
